Incubus - 2007-08-04 - Baltimore, MD @ Pimlico Race Course (M20)
Virgin Festival. Hot, humid, 3 stages. jlizard and I never left the main ("North") stage area. Great outdoor recording of a band who used to be "taper friendly" in the 90s.
Silversun Pickups - 2010-01-01 - Las Vegas, NV @ Joint (CK91)
Ben Harper - 2003-06-22 - Centreville, VA @ Bull Run Park (SM98)
Perfect location and excellent quality. Perhaps my best recording with the SM98’s. No EQ, just great natural outdoor acoustics from the venue hill. Unfortunately I ran out of batteries and missed the encores. Fun history fact - the first major battle of the American Civil War occurred at Bull Run.
Night Ranger - 2009-05-30 - Henderson, NV @ Sunset Amphitheatre (CK63)
Outdoor venue at Sunset Station Casino. Recorded on the right side, 22nd rows back. Excellent quality and a fun concert. HouseSeats comp tickets, too.
Heart - 2013-04-05 - Henderson, NV @ Grand Events Ballroom (CK61)
Honest Engines - 2011-03-18 - Las Vegas, NV @ Beat Coffeehouse (CK91)
Excellent quality. Months after the Skooners disbanded the Dewane brothers, Blair and Ian, started a new band. Same drummer plus cello and new bassist. This is their third performance. A month later the band was renamed to Rusty Maples. One of my favorite concerts - the entire set was new songs aside from two Skooners tunes with different arrangements.
Puscifer - 2009-02-15 - Las Vegas, NV @ Pearl (MIX)
Recorded and mixed by me. Excellent quality. Night #3 of 3 - the best performance of the run.
Bette Midler - 2010-01-03 - Las Vegas, NV @ Caesars Colosseum (CK91)
"The Showgirl Must Go On" residency. Great voice, bawdy, and no lip syncing - pretty amazing considering she's 65 here. Excellent quality and entertaining. Freebie comp tickets, too. This was one of my mom's favorite recordings.
Queens of the Stone Age - 2002-12-14 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Nick's Fat City (CSB)
Excellent "radio station ticket giveaway only" concert. Recorded right in front of Nick Oliveri. Any phasing you hear is the bouncer standing on my shoulders pushing crowd surfers away from stage. We had band permission to *multitrack record* this concert, but… We wheeled up two suitcases of gear and were denied entry by X105.9 radio station representatives. They wouldn't allow any recording. So, no multitrack. We were pissed. Instead we recorded from three different locations - center balcony, middle crowd, and front-of-stack (this recording). We did not record the opening set by Chevelle because we were arguing with radio station people.
Imagine Dragons - 2011-11-05 - Las Vegas, NV @ Fremont East Stage (AT853)
Rock the Block Vegas Music Summit, opening for Awolnation. Just a few months before the band "blew up". Did anyone else capture early Vegas gigs? I know I left the venue before several of their performances. Bunkhouse Saloon? Count's Vamp'd? South Point? Beauty Bar? O'Sheas? Wasted Space? Bite of Las Vegas? ...anyone?
Melvins - 2005-10-25 - Washington, DC @ Black Cat (SBD)
Melvins toured with Jello Biafra, plus David Scott Stone filling in on bass, during October and November 2005. The "Jelvins" set begins with "Plethysmograph". It was a dream come true standing "front row" watching Jello sing Dead Kennedys songs with a great backing band. Excellent quality and awesome performance - one of my favorites. A couple video clips can be found on YouTube and in the Melvins documentary.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – 2003-09-06 – Bristow, VA @ Nissan Pavilion (SM98)
"By The Way" tour. Arrived late. Got hassled by two horseback cops while preparing recording gear inside my car. Giddy up, horsey!! Apparently at this concert the venue parking lot had a no tailgating policy… whatever.
Amy Winehouse - 2007-08-04 - Baltimore, MD @ Pimlico Race Course (M20)
Mid-afternoon set at Virgin Festival. Such an amazing voice. RIP.
Everlast - 2008-07-04 - Las Vegas, NV @ Rock the Block Stage (SM98)
Free outdoor festival. Stage was next to El Cortez at Las Vegas Blvd & Fremont St. My folks were inside gambling and enjoying free White Castle sliders. It was brutally hot outside (114*) and the crowd was very drunk. I found a lamp post and held on as I got pushed around. Despite the craziness this was a really fun event.
Stone Temple Pilots - 2008-06-14 - Las Vegas, NV @ Pearl (CK91)
Night 2 of 2 at the Pearl. The best STP concert I've seen - Scott seemed lucid and didn't slur or fuck up any lyrics.
Blind Melon - 2008-04-30 - Las Vegas, NV @ Zia Records (CK91)
Acoustic in-store, excellent quality. Original lead singer Shannon died in 1995 and in late 2007 the band reunited with new lead singer Travis Warren.
Def Leppard - 2013-04-03 - Las Vegas, NV @ Joint (CK63)
In addition to playing the entire "Hysteria" album (in sequence!) they also opened for themselves, performing as the Def Leppard cover band "Ded Flatbird". Night 6 of the "Viva Hysteria!" residency. Excellent quality.
Monster Circus - 2009-03-21 - Las Vegas, NV @ Hilton Theater (CK91)
Featuring John Corabi (Motley Crue), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Tony Montana (Great White), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot), and Fred Coury (Cinderella). Residency show #3 of 18. Great concert. Very good quality. Their cover version of "Live Wire" sounds better than modern era Motley Crue!
Eagles of Death Metal - 2008-11-04 - Las Vegas, NV @ Beauty Bar (CK91)
Free outdoor concert on election night, rough and rowdy crowd. Fun concert. Very good quality.
Def Leppard - 2019-08-23 - Las Vegas, NV @ Zappos Theater (CK63)
Great concert with several deep cuts not performed in many years. Very good quality. Residency night #5 of 12.
Tool - 1996-11-23 - Philadelphia, PA @ Electric Factory (CSB)
Excellent quality and fantastic performance. Front-of-stack recording by my friend Jeff Sebastianelli (RIP). An incomplete version was pressed to bootleg CD ("3rd Leg") by Ed Phernetton. This version is Jeff's transfer of his DAT master - raw, complete, and unedited. Play it fucking loud!!
Bill Kirchen - 2005-11-24 - Annandale, VA @ Sunset Grille (C4)
Thanksgiving night. Towards the end of Bill Kirchen's Thursday-night residency at Sunset Grille. This teeny 49 person capacity biker/dive bar was walking distance from my apartment. Big thanks to Tony and Lexi for bringing me to this sold-out concert!
Fidel - 2000-11-25 - Washington, DC @ 930 Club (SBD)
Perfect mix and quality. Baltimore rock band. Dave Hill (vocals/guitar), Jermoe Maffeo (drums), Mike "Bigga" Haight (turntables), and Christian Valiente (bass). In 2004 the band broke up and Dave Hill reformed his previous band, Colouring Lesson. I got this CDR from Dave at an after-party when conversation drifted towards Fidel and he mentioned an old live CD in his car. He loaned me the disc and here it is. The band was opening for Mary Prankster – unfortunately Dave didn't have a copy of Mary's set.
Guided By Voices - 2000-04-07 - Iowa City, IA @ Gabe's Oasis (CSB)
"VG+/EX-" sound quality. I was concerned about drunken audience noise so a taller friend of mine helped me elevate my mics a little higher than normal on my favorite pole near stage. Great concert. Hazy memories. My master cut out after the first encore, I don't remember why. The second and third encores are from JP's DAT.
Veruca Salt – 1997-11-10 – Des Moines, IA @ Super Toad (CSB)
Very good recording and performance. Recorded front-of-stack. During the encore break, Nina refers to the matching bright-yellow jumpsuits she and Louise wore earlier in the concert. "They might look cool but that thing is fucking uncomfortable!"
Ozzy Osbourne - 1984-04-26 - Montreal, Quebec @ Mustache (SBD)
Ozzy Osbourne performed at the Montreal Forum on April 27, 1984. This four song late night set was recorded the evening before at a small club across the street. Ozzy was extremely intoxicated.
Colouring Lesson - 2004-12-31 - Ellicott City, MD @ Stone Cellar (SM98)
New Years Eve 2004, becoming 2005. Unique venue - a stone-walled basement below a casual dining restaurant, the Blue Point Grille. Both are now closed. The recording sounds great considering my low-fi setup and the very drunken crowd.
Rusty Maples - 2018-12-27 - Las Vegas, NV @ Bunkhouse Saloon (CK61)
"A Rusty Winter Formal" with founding member Courtney Waldron on cello. Nice to hear songs like "Early Out" and "Runner" with the original accompaniment.
Twisted Sister - 2009-12-16 - Las Vegas, NV @ Hilton Theater (CK91)
A heavy metal Christmas concert performed in the same theater where Elvis Presley played 837 consecutive sold out shows, as referenced by Dee Snider during the gig. Great quality recorded close to stage. Complimentary freeibe tickets too - thanks House Seats!
Marilyn Manson - 1997-05-11 - Camden, NJ @ Blockbuster Center (CSB)
Recorded by my friend Jeff who is sadly no longer with us. This is a copy of his "listening copy" CDR, transferred from his DAT Master. He probably EQ’d it using an external Behringer Ultracurve unit. Jeff was passionate about making excellent quality tapes and this one is no exception. His passion and legacy lives on through his incredible recordings. RIP buddy. Play it fucking loud!!
Marilyn Manson - 1994-07-18 - Plantation, FL @ Peaches Record Shop (AUD)
Acoustic Marilyn Manson! I think this was the second ever live performance of "Sweet Dreams".
Marilyn Manson - 1994-03-12 - Davie, FL @ Plus 5 Lounge (AUD)
Second-to-last "local" gig before the big tour with Nine Inch Nails. The audience chatter near the taper prior to "Lunchbox" is amusing. Taper says, "I’m trying to tape it". Crowd Guy says, "Where’s your drink? You don’t drink? Awww. You’re one of those good people, okay...What are you doing here?
Marilyn Manson - 1993-01-xx - “Refrigerator” demo (SBD)
Only 100 cassette copies made. The very last demo before recording their major label debut "Portrait of an American Family". The band name was officially shortened from "Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids" to "Marilyn Manson".
Frightened Rabbit - 2007-xx-xx - Very Okay Demo (SBD)
"We recorded them all in my bedroom at the time; I think the address was 42 Woodlands Drive, top floor left, in Glasgow. We had one shit microphone and a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder, and we did our very best with those 2 pieces of equipment (plus a crap drumkit, Telecaster, Yamaha PSS 270 keyboard and a small 12W Park combo – no effects pedals). I think the limited means forced us to make simple, succinct songs that would have an impact, given that we couldn’t rely on fancy recording techniques. It’s always worth remembering this when you are layering the 175th track of sound on a big shiny album. Maybe 171 of those tracks are utterly pointless." - Scott Hutchison
Donnas - 2000-03-28 - Iowa City, IA @ Gabe’s Oasis (CSB)
I also recorded video with Sam L.
Dismemberment Plan - 2000-04-13 - Iowa City, IA @ Green Room (CSB)
Excellent sound quality! I mounted binaural mics on a pole directly in front of stage. A few weeks later this band was Pearl Jam's European tour opener.
Agnostic Front - 2000-04-23 - Iowa City, IA @ Gabe’s (CSC)
Listen closely and you can hear firecrackers exploding behind me in the audience.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - 2000-04-26 - Iowa City, IA @ Carver-Hawkeye Arena (SS)
Beck - 1997-08-02 - East Troy, WI @ Alpine Valley (PZM)
Main stage at HORDE Festival '97.
Bob Marley - 1979-04-10 - Tokyo, Japan @ Sun Plaza Hall (FM)
Butthole Surfers – 1989-02-03 – San Diego, CA @ Ackerman Hall (ECM909)
Chaotic live show. Psychedelia, noise rock, and hardcore punk. Excellent quality.
Rusty Maples – 2016-10-28 – Las Vegas, NV @ Bunkhouse Saloon (CK61)
